Reflecting on Our Roots

Today, we invite you to journey back with us into the rich tapestry of Japanese‐Canadian history in Alberta, a story of perseverance, culture, and hope. A recent CBC feature beautifully traces the experiences of Japanese communities across Alberta, how generations have contributed to, shaped, and enriched this land through resilience, tradition, and togetherness.

At Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, we are deeply inspired by those stories. Every plant, every stone lantern, and every stunning feature reminds us of the bridges between cultures that persist through time.

What you’ll discover:

  • The hardships and triumphs of early Japanese settlers who made Alberta home
  • How traditions were kept alive, adapted, and shared
  • The power of community, memory, and cultural heritage

We believe in honouring the past to build a more inclusive present. We are grateful to all who have preserved these stories and to CBC for shining a light on them.

We encourage everyone to read the feature and reflect on the Japanese‐Canadian legacy in our province. Let’s continue celebrating, learning, and walking together, just as an inspired garden grows from many seeds.
