Take a moment to quiet your mind and body with a meditation class set in the serene backdrop of Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden here in Lethbridge, Alberta. We are now offering Meisou (Meditation) Classes with Aaron Roth inside the garden. Aaron is an experienced instructor who will take you through a variety of styles of meditation, no matter your experience.

Meditation Package: $27.50/class
Includes a drink, cushion for meditation, one meditation class, and a courtesy pass to come back for another visit to Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden

Drop In: $15/class
Includes one meditation class only. Does not include anything else. You must bring your own cushion/chair for meditation. Using a yoga mat or going "cushion-less" is not recommended.

Mindfulness Meditation

Thich Nhat Hanh’s Plum Village community defines mindfulness as a state of mind “we generate when we bring our mind back to our body and get in touch with what is going on in the present moment, within us and around us. We become aware of our breathing and come home to our body, fully present for ourselves and whatever we are doing.” Mindfulness allows us to slow down and take in each moment of our day in this fast-paced and ever changing world.  In this mediation class, we will practice sitting mindfulness meditation (focusing using our breath), bell meditation, and also walking meditation.  Instruction and guidance will be provided.  This practice is good for all levels of meditation experience.

Guided Meditation

In these classes, Aaron will guide participants through the practice of meditation using phrases, sounds, poetry, and short pieces of literature.  Guided meditations are especially good for beginners, as the prompting from the instructor helps to bring our attention back to the practice.  This practice is good for all levels of meditation experience.

Zazen-Kai – Zen Meditation 

In these classes, participants will experience zazen-shikantaza (“just sitting”) meditation and kinhin (walking) meditation from the Soto Zen tradition. The practice begins with two periods of sitting meditation and one walking meditation period.  Instruction and guidance for all the practices involved will be provided. The first hour of your class will be inside the garden, the remainder of class will be spent outside the garden. 

PLEASE NOTE: having a good meditation cushion or bench/chair for this class is essential.  If you are not utilizing Nikka Yuko’s cushion or bench, please bring a firm cushion to the class. Using yoga mats or going “cushion-less” for this class is not recommended. 

 About Aaron Roth

Aaron grew up in Lethbridge and has been a supporter of Nikka Yuko for many years. He trained in Karate under Sensei Taka Kinjo in Lethbridge for many years, which is where he had his first experiences of meditation. Aaron has studied various forms of meditation, yoga, and contemplative techniques from different traditions, both Eastern and Western. He is a founding member and facilitator of the Rocky Mountain Zen Buddhist Community (Lethbridge and Edmonton).In 2018, he completed his Level 1 meditation teacher training with Mandy Trapp of Lifestyle Meditation in Edmonton. In 2019, he completed his 200-hour meditation teacher training with Caroline Stewart of InspirED Me Meditation and Wellness in Edmonton. Aaron has also completed courses in integrative health using mindfulness and guided imagery through the University of Minnesota. In 2021, Aaron also completed his 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training through YogaRenew.
