Taiko Drums (Wadaiko)

There is a rich history behind the Japanese musical instrument Taiko Drums, also known as Wadaiko.  Originally Taiko Drums were used in theater and later on were used in times of war. Now a days the drums are typically only used for cultural performances, as they remain an iconic symbol for traditional Japanese culture.

The typical Taiko Drum will have a head diameter between 30cm (12 in) to 85 (33 in) with a large barrel-like body. Anyone familiar to Taiko Drums understands they are big instruments with a big sound. Multiple times each summer, the pounding thunder of Taiko Drums can be heard from miles away, as they perform inside the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden.
