Sugar Beets and Shortstops, exhibition launch

Friday, July 27, 2018

Time(s): 3:00pm

The story of Nikkei (Japanese decedents) baseball in Canada is one of adversity, incredible hardships, ingenious strategy and perseverance. In this Nikkei story the ball diamond became a battleground, where players fought to define their identity, community and to assert their citizenship. It is a true epic in the anthology of Canadian sport and one in need of investigation and celebration. In the words of player and manager Billy Beane, “How can you not be romantic about baseball?” In the context of Nikkei baseball history this quote could not ring truer.

Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, Galt Museum & Archives and Lethbridge Bulls Baseball Club present and Sugar Beets and Shortstops, an exhibition of Nikkei, Japanese and Southern Alberta Baseball history. Special thanks to the Nisei Baseball Research ProjectLethbridge Community Taiko Association - LCTA and King Of Trade / Serious Music Centre (Lethbridge)for supporting this exhibit.
